Consider Traditional Chinese Medicine over Antihistamines this Spring

Spring is such a wonderful and welcomed time of the year: the sun, the flowers, and the general spring is in the air vibe. Yet for a lot of us,  this seasonal shift also brings something less welcoming: itchy eyes, congestion, and waves of sneezing that seem to appear without warning. We can attest living in the midwest!

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone. Seasonal sensitivities are common, and many people turn to antihistamines for convenient relief.

Here’s the DL on Antihistamines:

They work by blocking histamine, a chemical released during the body’s allergic response. They can be effective in the short term, but often come with drowsiness, mental fog and dryness.

Let’s be honest, taking these is just a temporary fix and so many of us would prefer to try something a little more natural.

Why Try Traditional Chinese Medicine?

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), seasonal allergies aren’t seen as random. They’re understood as a sign that the body’s natural defenses may be a bit out of balance.

In the spring, when our system isn’t well supported, this can show up as symptoms like sneezing, itching, and congestion.

Through acupuncture and herbal medicine, our goal isn’t just to stop symptoms, but also to help the body become more balanced and less reactive over time.  These TCM modalities do so by:

  • Strengthening your body’s natural defenses so you’re less reactive to seasonal triggers

  • Supporting the lungs and sinuses to improve breathing, skin health, and immune response

  • Calming the body’s tendency toward irritation and inflammation that shows up as sneezing, itching, and congestion

The Moon Rabbit Way:

At Moon Rabbit, we take a gentle, supportive approach to seasonal care. Through a combination of treatments, daily rituals, and subtle lifestyle shifts, we help the system become more resilient over time.

Here are a few ways to support yourself through the season:

Herbal & Dietary Support

Small daily habits can make a meaningful difference in how your body responds.

  • Chrysanthemum tea: Traditionally used to clear wind-heat and soothe irritated, dry, or red eyes; modern research suggests it also has anti-inflammatory effects that can calm an overreactive immune system and decrease systemic inflammation.

  • Local, raw honey: Often incorporated as a seasonal tonic for the throat and Lung system

  • Customized herbal formulas: Customized based on your unique pattern to strengthen defenses and reduce reactivity.  So for those of you who live in Chicago, you can book an individualized Herbal Formulation

Additional Ways to Calm Allergic Systems in the Spring:

  1. Acupressure & Ear Seeds

Acupuncture is a powerful way to regulate the body, treat inflammation, and decrease our allergic response.   Acupuncture’s  effects can be extended between and beyond treatments through ear seeding.

  • Ear seeds provide continuous, gentle stimulation to points related to the lung, immune function, and stress regulation

  • Acupressure on key points (such as LI4, LI20, and Yintang) can help open the nasal passages and calm acute symptoms within minutes

Apply gentle, steady pressure with your finger to each point for 30–60 seconds. You can repeat a few times a day, especially when symptoms start to flare.

  1. Aligning with the Season

  • Limit exposure during high pollen or windy days

  • Rinse the face and hair after time outdoors to reduce lingering irritants

  • Prioritize rest and hydration to support the Lung and immune system

In TCM, these simple acts are part of preserving harmony between the body and environment.

So… Which Approach Is Better?

It doesn’t have to be one or the other.

Antihistamines may offer short-term relief during flare-ups. At the same time, TCM provides a framework for long-term balance helping the body respond with greater ease and less reactivity over time, which is the ultimate goal.

Our patients find that with consistent support, symptoms lessen, and reliance on quick fixes naturally decreases.
