Pediatric Acupuncture

Pediatric acupuncture is a safe, gentle, and non-invasive therapy designed specifically for children. Using very fine needles or alternative methods, it stimulates specific points on the body to encourage healing and balance. Grounded in traditional Chinese medicine, pediatric acupuncture is tailored to meet a child’s individual needs and typically involves fewer needles and shorter appointments for added comfort.

Pediatric Acupuncture

The Benefits

Pediatric acupuncture helps support healthy development by calming the nervous system and encouraging the body’s natural ability to heal and regulate. Treatments are safe, age-appropriate, and often bring both immediate comfort and lasting benefits as children thrive in greater harmony.

Sensory Support

By gently calming the nervous system and promoting a greater sense of ease in the body, pediatric acupuncture can help provide sensory support and comfort for neurodivergent children.

Growth Support

Pediatric acupuncture is tailored to support healthy development by encouraging balance across physical, emotional, and energetic systems.

Digestive Support

Pediatric acupuncture may help promote smoother digestion and comfort, which can be especially helpful during growth and developmental changes.

Immunity Boosting

Ongoing pediatric acupuncture treatments can help support the developing immune system, encouraging the body’s ability to respond to everyday stressors.

Nervous System Support

Pediatric acupuncture helps calm and regulate the nervous system, which can support emotional balance, sleep quality, and overall comfort.

Gentle Regulation

Pediatric acupuncture uses light, age-appropriate techniques to support the body’s natural balance without overstimulation.

Your first visit begins with a thorough, one-on-one conversation about your health history, lifestyle, and current priorities. We take a broader view beyond individual symptoms to explore patterns in sleep, digestion, stress, pain, energy, and more, and how these systems influence one another.

This in-depth intake helps us build a care plan that feels thoughtful, personalized, and specifically aligned with your needs.

Initial Appointment

Pediatric acupuncture visits are customized based on your child’s current symptoms, comfort level, and wellness goals. Treatments use gentle stimulation of specific points to support digestion, sleep, immunity, and emotional regulation, with additional supportive services included as needed.

These sessions are designed to feel safe, soothing, and supportive, allowing the body to relax and begin strengthening overall balance over time.

Treatment

Acupuncture is most effective when approached as ongoing support rather than a single appointment. With each visit, care evolves based on how your body is responding, helping encourage continued balance, regulation, and long-term resilience.

After sessions, it’s common to feel deeply relaxed, energized, or slightly tired as the body begins integrating the work. Staying hydrated, eating nourishing meals, and allowing space for rest can help support this process.

Over time, consistent care helps reinforce stability across body systems and creates a stronger foundation for lasting wellness.

The Science Behind Pediatric Acupuncture

Pediatric acupuncture gently stimulates nerve pathways that help regulate the developing nervous system. This subtle input supports balanced sensory processing, calms overactive stress responses, and encourages healthier communication between the brain and body as children grow and adapt.

Using age-appropriate techniques, pediatric acupuncture supports circulation to targeted areas, helping deliver oxygen and nutrients to growing tissues. Improved blood flow can reduce muscle tension, support immune function, and assist the body in healing efficiently while remaining comfortable and well-tolerated for children.

Pediatric acupuncture engages the nervous and immune systems in a gentle way, supporting the release of calming neurochemicals that help regulate mood, sleep, and stress responses. These effects promote relaxation, emotional balance, and overall resilience, supporting both physical and emotional well-being in children.

Frequently Asked Questions

Side effects are very rare and typically mild when acupuncture is performed by a licensed professional. Some children may experience slight bruising, temporary tiredness, or mild soreness at the needle site, which usually resolves quickly. Serious side effects are extremely uncommon.

Are there any negative side effects to acupuncture?

Acupuncture can help calm the nervous system, reduce stress hormones, and promote relaxation, making it a valuable tool for children who experience anxiety, trouble sleeping, or emotional sensitivity. Regular sessions can support emotional balance and resilience over time.

Can acupuncture help anxiety in children?

Not usually. Acupuncture needles are extremely thin — about the width of a human hair — and most children feel little to no pain. They may experience a brief tingling, warmth, or heaviness at the needle site, which usually fades within seconds. Many kids even fall asleep during treatment.

Is acupuncture painful for kids?

When performed by a licensed practitioner, acupuncture is very safe for children. Pediatric acupuncture uses gentle techniques and sterile, single-use needles. Most children find the sessions relaxing and enjoyable once they become familiar with the process.

Is acupuncture safe for children?

Yes, acupuncture may help children with ADHD by calming the nervous system, improving focus, and supporting emotional regulation. It’s often used alongside behavioral therapy and other treatments to reduce hyperactivity, restlessness, and anxiety while promoting overall balance and well-being.

Can acupuncture help kids with ADHD?

Acupuncture can be safely performed on people of all ages — including infants, children, and teens — when provided by a licensed practitioner. The treatment approach and technique are always adjusted for the child’s age and comfort level, often using fewer and smaller needles or even non-needle methods such as gentle acupressure or laser stimulation.

What age is appropriate for acupuncture?

What if I miss my appointment?

Yes, eating something before your appointment, even a small snack, is always recommended.

Should I eat before an acupuncture appointment?

Acupuncture involves the insertion of very thin needles (30 times thinner than the traditional needle you experience at your physician’s office) at strategic points on the body.  Most people believe that acupuncture only treats pain; however, it has a myriad of other uses, including overall wellness, stress management, and fertility support.

From an Eastern perspective, acupuncture is a technique for balancing the flow of qi (pronounced chee), or energy, which flows through meridians in your body.  By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncture re-establishes balance for overall health and wellbeing.

Alternatively, the Western perspective is that acupuncture stimulates nerves, muscles, and fascia (connective tissue) to reduce pain and treat tension.  Acupuncture treatment can help the body release a spasmed muscle or interrupt the signal of pain. From a biochemical perspective, findings from research have demonstrated that acupuncture stimulation causes a release of endorphins, serotonin, enkephalins, and γ-amino-butyric acid (GABA; a major inhibitory neurotransmitter of the brain), norepinephrine, and dopamine, other studies have also demonstrated that acupuncture can treat insomnia, as well as support conception through Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), such as IVF.   Acupuncture has also been demonstrated to increase blood flow, aid in circulation, improve sleep and ease mental health concerns.
